The Suzhou Museum (new hall) was designed by the world-famous modernist architect I. M. Pei. As Mr. Pei’s ancestral home is Suzhou, he affectionately called the Suzhou Museum “my little daughter”. Mr. Pei has devoted more affection to the design of the museum than any of his previous works. His love for his native place, for Chinese culture, and for geometric figures are all condensed into this building.
The Suzhou Museum is more like a modern garden, where people come to see the exhibits as well as the garden. A Chinese once spoke highly of the Suzhou Museum – “The museum itself is the biggest exhibit among them”. No matter in color, style, or layout, it has absorbed the essence of Suzhou classical gardens. The whitewashed walls and grey tiles, the curved eaves and the gurgling water outside the glass of the lobby all tell every visitor that this is the south of the Yangtze River, this is the Chinese garden, and this is Suzhou.
