Slow Life in Water City, Night Tour of Fengcheng River

Taizhou, located in the middle of Jiangsu Province, is a famous cultural city with a history of more than 2,100 years. “Tai” refers to the auspiciousness and is extracted from “Guo Tai Min An”, a phrase meaning “the country is prosperous and the people are living in peace”.

More than 700 years ago, after visiting Taizhou, the famous Italian traveler Marco Polo praised it sincerely, “This city is not very big, but there are so many kinds of happiness in this world.” You can enjoy the morning tea in Taizhou from a dish of hot shredded dried bean curd (Tang Gan Si in Chinese) to a bowl of fish soup noodle (Yu Tang Mian in Chinese). In spring, you can wander among the blooming rape flowers in Xinghua Duo Field (raised wetland field) to enjoy the brightest spring sunlight; in summer, you can go to Fengcheng River at night and listen to Kunqu Opera “the Peach Blossom Fan” to feel the poetic flavor of summer night; in autumn, the season of health preservation, you can mediate and rest to attain mental tranquility in the fragrance of traditional Chinese medicine to appreciate the quiet beauty of autumn; in winter, you can sip the hot tea and listen to the drama, letting the time pass just to enjoy the winter time…

Fengcheng River is a moat surrounding the square-shaped Taizhou ancient city. The scenic spots in the scenic area are concentrated in the southeast corner, mainly Wanghai Lou on the north bank and Peach Orchard on the south bank. The green willows on both banks of the river are swaying, and the humanistic buildings are scattered in an orderly manner. It is very comfortable to walk along the river or boat on the river.

If you want to fully appreciate the city of Taizhou, don’t miss the experience of taking a night cruise on the Fengcheng River in the gaily-painted pleasure-boat. It is worth mentioning that when you visit Fengcheng River at night, you will pass a stone memorial archway. It was once the premiere site of the famous Kunqu Opera “Peach Blossom Fan”. Now, this legendary play is put on the stage almost every day.

In the old days of Taizhou, taking a night cruise along the Fengcheng River while watching a play and drinking tea were regarded as extremely extravagant things, and only the dignitaries could have such experience. Nowadays, everyone can have access to them. It’s the most joyful thing to get on the boats, and enjoy the scenery on both sides of the river in the cool breeze when the evening lights are lit.
