Making Sola Flowers

Known as the "flower that never withers", the making of Sola Flower is one of Yangzhou's intangible cultural heritages. Sola Flower is a handmade handicraft made of Chinese herbal medicine Tetrapanax papyrifer (rice-paper plant) through more than ten processes. The making of Sola Flower is a demanding test of an artisan's skills, from petals and leaves to stems and pots, which requires the maker to carefully analyze and handle with precision and skill. It takes about ten years or even several decades for an experienced artisan to hone the skills. The Sola Flowers made artistically by the folk artists are soft in texture, elegant in color, and comparable to real flowers.
