Waxberry gets ripe in the plum rain season at the transitional period of spring and summer and it is one of the Wuyue region customs to pick up waxberry around the Summer Solstice.
The poet master Su Dongpo once wrote that “Xiliang grapes and Fujian and Guangdong litchi are inferior to Wuyue waxberry”, local people think waxberry has gathered the dainty and exquisite local conditions and customs of southern China, and is like the unsurpassed beauty among fruits that is delicate, charming and lovely. Besides, in the image of Chinese customs, vermilion and red are the colors symbolizing wealth and happiness, so the purple red waxberry is easier to get popular among people.
The waxberry planting in Jiangsu is mainly centered at the hilly area around Taihu Lake covering an area of more than 30,000mu, including the East Hill, West Hill, Guangfu, Tong’an of Dongting Lake in Suzhou, Yushan Hill of Changshu, the area along Mashan Hill, Dafu in Wuxi and the area along Panjia, Xueyan in Changzhou.
The waxberry pickup period is concentrated in the middle and late June and many places in Jiangsu provide the waxberry pickup activity for tourists.
