Zhuangyuan Street: The Time in the Alley

Wandering on Zhuangyuan Street of Xuzhou is like entering a time machine. The half-opened dark wooden doors are like ancient storytellers, whispering the passing era behind them to the people passing by.

Zhuangyuan Street is not very long. You can walk the whole street in less than 20 minutes while enjoying the scenery on both sides. Although it is only 1 kilometer long, the street has circled many residences and courtyards, including Xima Stage, the Cui’s Courtyard, the Liu’s Garden, and the Quan’s Archway. Compared to Jiefang Road to its east, the remaining sites left by previous elites in the old town have made Zhuangyuan Street a little less mundane but a little more historical.

There are rows of grand courtyards on Zhuangyuan Street, including the homes of previous officials, wealthy merchants, and scholarly families. The buildings and gardens are cleverly constructed against the mountain. Stepping over the high threshold into the house, exquisite brick carvings and layers of courtyards will extend in front of your eyes.
