Meiling Palace: The “necklace” of Nanjing

Meiling Palace is situated in Xiaohong Mountain to the southwest of Zijin Mountain. Its real name is “The Mansion of the Chairman of the National Government,” which is now a national key cultural relics’ protection unit.

The main building of the Meiling Palace is a three-story and double-eave mountain-style palace, with green glazed tiles on its top. There are over 1,000 phoenixes carved on the glazed tiles of its eaves, which is the unprecedented case in China’s history. The colored painting of Meiling Palace is unique among multiple constructions in the period of the Republic of China (1912-1949).The area of colored painting here at least covers an area of thousands of square meters, and some paintings are also made by famous artists.

Looking down from the sky, the building built on the hillside as a whole is like a string of pearl necklaces with emerald pendants. The ring road on both sides leading to the main building of the Meiling Palace with oriental plane covered looks like a “necklace”. The gate is the junction of the “necklace”, and the dark green glazed tiles are like the pendant of a necklace.

This “necklace” changes with the different seasons. In spring and summer days, the oriental planes on both sides of the Lingyuan Road and Meiling Palace Scenic Area are green, thus the “necklace” is also green. In autumn days, the “necklace” changes into gold color as the oriental plane leaves turn yellow.
