Suzhou jade carving

Suzhou jade carving is an ancient traditional folk carving art, Suzhou is one of the cradles of Chinese jade carving. Chinese jade carvings enjoy a high reputation in the world. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Suzhou became the manufacturing center of Chinese jade wares. According to the book Healthy Creations written by Song Yingxing in the late Ming Dynasty, Suzhou should be recommended for fine jade collections in the capital.

Suzhou jade carvings are mainly small and medium-sized pieces. When making, they often use precious materials such as white jade and jadeite, with exquisite workmanship, skillful techniques and rich subject matter. Jade carvings are usually made through multiple processes such as material selection, cutting, design, carving, polishing, etc. The jade carvings are designed while being carved.  In particular, the skillful use of natural colors of materials and “artful carving” depends entirely on the ingenuity of artists. Suzhou jade carving has the characteristics of hollow, ethereal and fine craftsmanship. Proper density, vivid shape, smooth lines and exquisite design make people marvel at the divine skills.

The modern Suzhou jade carving technique inherits the traditional artistic style of the “Suzhou school” and has soft and decorative patterns and lines. The idea of hanging accessories is especially unique. Jade carvers naturally contain rich life insights and modern aesthetic tastes. The charm of ancient times and the style of modern times are shown more clearly.

In June 2008, Suzhou jade carving was included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
