In Sept. 2011, it was included in the third batch of Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

As a special traditional technique in China’s pottery making, The black pottery manufacturing technique is spread in Ganyu County, Haizhou District and other areas of Lianyungang City. It is an excellent pottery after Yangshao cultural colored pottery with a long-lasting history. It is reputed as “The Art of Earth and Fire, the Crystallization of Strength and Beauty”, this ancient civilization won the common people’s affection!

Its kiln burning process requires the proficiency of “recognizing the heat control,” so that the temperature and fumigation can be controlled, and the wood of the kiln must be pine wood with high salt content from the south of the mountain. Certain kind of chemical reaction can make black pottery products as black as ink, and bright as lacquer, hard as porcelain, and thin as wing. It plays a significant role in the process of ceramic products in China. It not only contains a sense of historical connation, but also has a modern sense of happiness with a high aesthetic value.

The black pottery process of Lianyungang City is well documented as the first generation of Guo Weiliang Workshop in Guobu Village, Tashan Township, Ganyu County in 1866 (the fourth year of Tongzhi Emperor’s Reign in the Qing Dynasty). It has been handed down for nine generations. Now the major manufacturing enterprise is Lianyungang Black Pottery Art Co., Ltd., and the main inheritors are Zhang Wenqing and Zhang Mingshu and other people in Tuowang Township, Ganyu County.
