A Cultural Tour of Suqian

Qianlong Emperor (Qing dynasty) made six tours of southern China and Suqian offered accommodation for five times. The emperor elatedly named it as the “Top City of Picturesque Spring” and the city was such granted. In fact, the city connects the Yangtze River and the Yellow River, which are the two longest rivers in China, so its location means great strategic importance. It is also the hometown of Xiang Yu (Ruler of Western Chu State), a historic figure who rebelled against Qin dynasty.

The Trace of a King

Xiang Yu’s legend got spread even to the neighboring country Japan. He was born in a place called Wutong Alley. After so many eras, the alley is now a community of prosperity. The Xiang House, Xiang Gardens, his former residence, the Clan Temple of Xiang Yu, Xiang Yu Museum, Yu’s (Xiang Yu’s Wife) Pertinent Old Houses are all restored. His life story and his well told love story with Yu Ji, an imperial concubine against the cruel background of wars, can all be learned.

They say that the traditional northern architectural style is grand and powerful while the style in the southern part shows more touch of elegance and delicacy. And in addition to the above mix, people would also observe its combination of the official and civil garden styles. Tourists never feel being denied by the stone and wood constructions, as traditional performances are on many times every day to warm up the buildings. Actors and actresses in ancient costume put on a sincere welcome ritual. In front of Yu’s Shop, the light-hearted dancing goes with the prosper “Western Chu Fair”, presenting routine life back then to the guests. The wedding ceremony at that time is also well presented too. Tourists are welcomed to participate if they’re interested. A show about the renowned doomed historic scene called Hongmen Banquet is available to spectators, from which one can see the pivot strife in history openly and secretly. Also, the elegant and yet loose costumes render the very characteristics of fair ladies at that time.
