Xuzhou Wind and Drum Music 徐州鼓吹乐

As a type of Han instrumental music, Xuzhou wind and drum music is mainly played by suona horn and accompanied with reedpipe, flute and other wind instruments. Sometimes, it will be with Bangzi and Chinese percussion.

Wind and drum music is part of the Han traditional custom activities, and suona horn group is a kind of professional band. So it is mainly performed at weddings, funerals and sacrifices. In 2011, Xuzhou wind and drum music was included in the third batch of national intangible cultural heritage.

Xuzhou suona horn of Feng county, Pei county, Suining county and urban area are most respective. As a hub of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, suona horn became part of Xuzhou folk music in the Ming Dynasty.

Xuzhou suona horn plays a unique role in the art effect of leading, accompaniment or ensemble with gongs and drums, which is usually used in the performance of Yangge, drum music, opera, song and dance etc.

Xuzhou souna horn, especially its unconstrained and trilling tune, is suitable for an enthusiastic and joyful atmosphere and a magnificent and splendid scene. At the same time, it can express people’s inner thoughts and feelings deeply and delicately, and vividly imitate the birds and insects’ sing, giving people a beautiful feeling lasts for three days.
