The World’s Largest Abacus Museum

Abacus is known as an important tool for numerical calculation. The dialing of beads follows the mantras, “When less than five, add one with lower one bead up, add two with lower two beads up; when more than five, add one with five minus four, add two with five minus three…” Therefore, the abacus is regarded as “the earliest computer in the world.” Nantong Abacus Museum is currently the world’s largest abacus themed museum, with a collection of over 10,000 abacus-related historical materials.

The museum is divided into different areas, including the Historical Exhibition, Boutique Exhibition, and Red Sandalwood Exhibition. The antique decoration of the Historical Exhibition has vividly expressed the long history and profound development of abacuses in China. The Boutique Exhibition displays ancient and modern abacuses of different sizes, shapes, and textures, allowing the visitors to feel the beauty of Chinese abacus products and the profundity of abacus culture.

In addition to learning the exquisite abacus culture in the museum area, you can enjoy the scenery strolling on the footpath along the Haohe River in the museum area or experience the leisure of fishing near the waters of “Yinyuetan” after the rain. Moreover, with a cup of tea in hand, you can understand the true meaning of life at “Xinyixie”.
