Taizhou’s Qiao Garden

Qiao Garden is located in the old city of Taizhou City, Jiangsu Province. It is bounded to the west by Hailing North Road (formerly known as Baziqiao Straight Street) and to the south by Baziqiao East Street. The garden area is not large, but it has a clever conception and a long history. It is called “Huaizuo No.1 Garden”. It is now a provincial cultural relic protection unit in Jiangsu Province.

The history of Qiao Garden can be traced back to Rishe Garden in Ming Dynasty. It was a private garden built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, which was later owned by the salt commissioner Qiao Songnian. It was abolished several times and the name of the garden changed from period to period. Among the frequent changes of owners, the scenery in the garden also changes a lot.

The whole garden consists of buildings, landscapes and flowers. It is small and exquisite, elegant and unique, and ingenious in conception. In particular, ancient cypress, rare stone, flowers and trees to show the changes of the four seasons, which have become the prominent features of Qiaoyuan.

Because the garden pays attention to the arrangement of flowers and trees, the naming of buildings is often related to this. Such as two-point bamboo House, Jielv House, Songchui Pavilion, Yinchao Pavilion, Jiaoyuxuan, Wenguifang, etc. Therefore, the cultural contents of Qiaoyuan are extremely rich.

In 2006, Taizhou municipal government started Qiaoyuan expansion project. In terms of preserving the original style, it will present the 14 scenic spots in its heyday and add sub-scenic spots, contrast scenic spots and residential areas. The garden area will be expanded from 1,500 square meters to 12,000 square meters.
