Xuzhou Pantao Mountain Scenic Area 徐州蟠桃山景区

Xuzhou Pantao Mountain Scenic Area is a Class 4A Tourist Attractions in China. Located in the foothills of Pantao Mountain in Xuzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone, it covers an area of more than 1,100 hectares. The main body is Baolian Temple, which was built in Eras of Southern and Northern Courts in China (420-589AD). It is China’s first temple with Indian style, and its Patriarch Faxian is also a monk.

Over a thousand years, the Baolian Temple has experienced vicissitudes, has prospered and declined several times, and was renamed several times. It was named Baolian Temple during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, and was abandoned before the founding of the People’s Republic of China (1949). The reconstructed Baolian Temple has “eight halls, two pavilion and one courtyard”. The architectural features show the grand style of the Tang Dynasty. The eaves between the main hall and the tower overlap and interlace, which is both elegant and classic.

Baolian Temple in the scenic area has created the “six Top No.1s” in China:

  1. Qifo Hall-the largest Shakya Mani Hall in China.
  2. Tongtian Pavilion-the tallest Buddhist pavilion in China.
  3. Tianguan Maitreya Buddha Statue-The largest indoor forged bronze Buddha statue in China.
  4. The Guanyin Mural of the Island-The Shakya Mani Hall contains a Guanyin mural with a length of 37.5 meters and a height of 9.5 meters, currently the largest mural of Buddhist themes in China.
  5. Faxian, the monk enshrined in the patriarch’s palace was the first monk in China who had returned from India.
  6. It is the first stupa with Indian style in China.

The rebuilt Baolian Temple, as the core of Pantao Buddhist Cultural Scenic Spot, will follow the development concept of Pantao Buddhist Scenic Spot, which is people-oriented and nature-respected, and strive to endow the Buddhist teachings with new connotations of modernization, humanization, life and science.
